Trump Departs Typical Republican Position on Abortion

On Thursday, former President Trump said in an interview with NBC that a six week abortion ban was “too short.” He also did not commit to saying he would be voting against a Florida ballot measure that would guarantee the right to an abortion within the state.*

The electoral impact of this could be significant, as a position like this will alienate some conservative voters. Depending on how effectively he is able to walk back these statements (or lean into them), we could see a totally different race come November. A pivot to the middle on abortion costs him with his base, but opens up the possibility for more moderates to join the Trump coalition.

*Trump has since said he will be voting No on Amendment 4
